Las Vegas + 40
Momma was surprised to find out that Daddy had organized a trip to Las Vegas with three of her favorite ladies. It was a great way to celebrate Momma's big 4-0.
Maya made this very sweet card for Momma and handed it to her right as she got on the bus on Friday.
This was unsolicited and one of mommas favorite birthday moments.

Garbage
Dexter continues to adore all things related to trash. You may remember his love of the garbage trucks from his toddler days. Now he loves helping us bring the cans in and out each week. I'm sure he will always be this enthusiastic about trash duties.

Dexter at 3.5 Years
Dexter is three and half…
Here are some approximate stats:
Weight: 39 lbs (around 88th percentile)
Height: 41 inches (around 89th percentile)
Where to start with this guy? He’s really developing a personality. He loves to be silly and make people laugh. He’ll do a silly voice, a funny movement, anything he can think that makes people smile. He’s still very easy going and pretty active at the same time. There are definitely his Mr. Hyde moments as he continues to experiment with independence, but when Dr. Jekyll returns he can be quite sweet.
Dex loves to be a part of the action and we like to call him Mr. Non Sequitur because he will do anything to be a part of the conversation even if it means him blurting out “Fire engines are red!” when we are talking about what Maya did at school. As he has for most of his life, he doesn’t generally just say anything. Every word is said with interesting intonations and quite dramatically. There’s a lot of “That’s GREAT.” “Good job MaYA!” “DinnerTIME?” He also really likes to use the words “actually” and “because” when explaining anything.
He’s enjoying school and he now mentions a few of his friends and talks about what they did that day. School is generally a place he looks forward to visiting and it’s nice that he usually runs in happily. He’s drawing faces, shapes, and little stick figures and is beginning to form some letters. It not completely definitive yet, but it appears the he may be left-handed like his Mommy. He loves books and dutifully brings a book each morning to the bus stop where Maya catches the bus. He loves to show them to the other adults and kids. He also likes watching a few shows with Maya like “Octonauts,” “Tom and Jerry,” and “Sesame Street.” He also has decided that the Curious George Halloween special is the best thing that ever happened. We get asked to watch that one daily. Dancing and listening to music are important also parts of Dexter’s day. He has mastered the art of controlling iTunes and he loves finding his favorite songs from the album art and playing them. He has some specific dance moves for specific songs and he loves scrunching up his face like he’s getting ready to do some serious head-banging when he’s really into the song.
Dex loves being outside and loves doing anything that Maya does. They generally play together really well. Dex has started riding on a balance bike that was once Maya’s and he is really great at coasting around on it with his feet off the ground. It seems like his transition to a regular bike might not be that difficult. He loves soccer and throwing balls. Of course, he still adores cars, truck, trains, and all other things that go. Definitely falling into the stereotypical boy categories.
He’s now stopped napping and has transitioned into a full-sized mattress, but we haven’t yet put it on a proper bed frame because he still occasionally rolls out.
We are just about ready to do night-time potty training. We’ll see how that goes. He’s still not loving pooping, but the general trend is positive as far as number 2 goes. While things aren’t perfect, it’s nice to feel like we are nearing the finish line for some of the physical milestones like the end of naps and the end of diapers.
Dexter is a coming into his own and it’s fun to watch this crazy little guy evolve.

Happy Persian New Year!
This year we decided to embrace Norooz, the Persian new year (celebrated on the vernal equinox), and all the events that surround it. Thankfully, a family in our neighborhood was kind enough to introduce us to these unique traditions.
On Tuesday night before Norooz, we went to a local celebration of Chaharshanbe Suri, which is a big party that includes jumping over fire while saying (roughly translated to English), "Give me your beautiful red color, take back my sickly pallor." The idea is that one is cleansed and renewed by giving away the old emotional baggage from the year before and taking the rich new energy from the flames. Dexter and Daddy jumping over fires.

This doesn't really show how many people were there. The place was packed with very friendly Persians.
Inspired by Nika's family, we decided to make our own HalfSeen table. HaftSeen translates to Seven S's as the various items all start with the Persian S. The table is prepared with all the designated symbolic items and the family gathers near it at Norooz.
Maya's friend Sophia happened to be over at our house at the exact moment of the New Year. Very exciting!
