Maya at 6 Years

Here are the current stats:
Weight: 43.8 lbs (40th percentile).
Height: 45 inches (50th percentile).

Maya has now finished her first year of public school and has gone through quite a metamorphosis.  She has become a confident, outgoing, kindergarten graduate.

This year included her introduction to public school and all of the rules and responsibilities that go with it.  On her first days of Kindergarten, she came home reciting all of the various things you needed to do at different times of day.  She loved all the rules and structure.  Her reading skills have taken off and she can now read books like Dr. Seuss and other early readers on her own.  She is like a little sponge coming home a repeating facts she's learn verbatim and wanting to show us how she can do math problems.  It's been great to see her make new friends and become so comfortable at school.

She has become extremely interested in telling stories and writes picture books and picture stories often.  She doesn't spend a huge amount of time on her drawings, but we're always amazed at her ability to capture the essence of a character or a movement so well.  Of course, we are a little biased.  Maya still loves music and has now learned how to control the iTunes on our computer which means that she has become a DJ when we let her.

Her imagination has gone wild and she loves pretend games more than anything.  Usually they involve tying someone up and going to jail, but that's okay.  She also likes board games and can really play them now.  She has become very athletic and likes trying to race the bus down the street.  She likes playing baseball and soccer and talks about how much fun she has a PE in school.  We are still working on getting her swimming going as she still isn't water safe.  She's getting more interested in bike riding and we hope she'll be riding on two wheels before the end of the summer.  She also loves exploring.  She likes digging around in the garden for bugs, looking at plants, and climbing on rocks.

She and Dexter have developed a great relationship.  She is really patient with him and he worships her.  Dexter also takes out his frustration on her and she is good about not hurting him when he bugs her.  Maya really cares about him and is a wonderful babysitter.

We are grateful to have such a lovable, interesting, and funny little kid in our lives.  Happy 6th birthday!

Birthday On Safari Pt 2

Today is the big Safari day.  We decided to take the 3 hour jeep/walking tour.  It was not recommended for little guys, so Dexter stayed back with our babysitter, Elizabeth.  We had a great time.

 Maya and Riley wake up.

Old man Dexter is ready for a fun day.

 Elizabeth arrives.

Maya and Mommy take a turn up top.

 Nice ride.

 Ready for action.

Kudus and a bongo.  Yes, those are real animal names.

We got very close to some giraffes (this is not a telephoto lens).

Mom and her new baby still less than 24 hours old.

 Maya looks down from above.

This is a different Jeep, but it gives an idea of what the enclosures were like.

 Daddy heads up top.

 Ladies having fun.

 Cape buffalo.

 Happy girl.

There was a lot of this all day long.

 Giraffes and flamingos...so happy together.

 The birthday crew.

Mission accomplished.
